You've seen them on almost every webpage you've visited, including this one. It's the universal icon for RSS. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. What does this mean to you, the golfer? That depends on where and how you get your news, golf or otherwise. If you're "home page" is my.yahoo.com, igoogle.com, or other similar places, you are looking at RSS "feeds" everyday when you read your news. The little windows showing news, sports, etc, are filled with headlines just begging to be clicked. The headlines and the news within them are feeds from other websites via the RSS syndication. Most of thes websites act like "portals" to other places on the internet. Instead of having to surf to each individual website, you can add a feed to your home page and save some time.
For example, I use Yahoo's "My Yahoo" as one of my homepages. When I first turn on my browser, all of my subscribed "feeds" show up on the first page as shown in the photo below. Note the Oobgolf feed
It's a convenient way to get the news I want, all in one location. In addition to the above icon, a lot of websites now give you the option of c licking on one of their own icons. These icons, similar to the one below, instantly put the feed on the webpage or "feed reader" of your choice. In addition to the regular places you can find feeds, such as CNN, Golf.com, etc, if you have a favorite blogger or a friend's website you frequent, and they have an RSS Icon on their site, you can add that to your home page also. So, if you like reading about the antics of your Aunt Mary on her website, have her blog posts show up alongside news about Tiger and Phil. If you're still confused about all of this, check out the video below that I grabbed off YouTube. It's a pretty simple explanation of how things work. One bit of warning. RSS feeds can be addicting!
