from cancer.
In addition to his broad work as an actor,
(he won an Oscar for The Color of Money ),
he was a professional race car driver, and gave
away tons of money through his Newman's Own
food business. Another charity he started was the
Hole in the Wall Camps.
Newman's Own apparently started off as a joke.
He was tired of giving away bottles of wine and
such to his neighbors as Christmas gifts and
one year decided to bottle his own salad dressing.
The following February his neighbors started hitting
him up for some more and it gave him the idea of
starting a non-profit business. According to it's
website, it has raised more than $175 million dollars
for charity. This enabled him to create a camp for
children that have serious illnesses,
The Hole in the Wall Camps. You can help continue his legacy by purchasing one of his products (I love
his popcorn), or by contributing to his camp.
I know this is probably an odd post for this kind of website, but as a fan of his movies, after hearing about
his death I learned more about his chairty work and became even more impressed with him. One of my
all time favorite movies he starred in was The Sting. One of the quotes I found online about his death was
made by Sally Fields. I thought it was cool:
"Sometimes God makes perfect people," fellow "Absence of Malice" star Sally Field said, "and Paul Newman
was one of them."
