Well, with the help of my older kids (Gift Cards!) I finally went out and purchased a new set of irons.
I've been playing for years with an older set of King Cobra's but with all of the new technology out there I thought it was time for a change. I did some online research and narrowed the field down a bit, then went to a local golf retail store (Wide World of Golf & Tennis) and started banging away. I started off with a set of 4 different irons:
Calloway Big Bertha Irons
Cobra S9
Taylor Made R7's
Taylor Made Burner XD
From there, I narrowed it down to the two Taylor Mades. I had previously rented a set of Taylor Made R7's at a golf course in Mexico, so I was a little familiar with them. I was able to hit both sets well, but in the end the Burner XD's had a better feel and I seemed to hit them a tad farther and straighter. Even my mis-hits seemed to wind up near the computer generated green.
To be honest, these particular clubs were not on my initial list. I recently found some articles discussing the MPF (Matlby Playability Factor) in which certain club heads are scientifically more "playable" than other club heads. The MPF ranges from Ultra Game Improvement down to Classic (mostly blades). The Burner XD's fall under "Game Improvement" clubs, or the 3rd tier down from the supposed "most playable". (click here for a chart) I was initially looking for one of the Ultra Game rated sets, but there apparently is some controversy regarding whether or not the formula used is valid.
In any case, after hacking away with all four sets of 6 irons, the Burner XD's just had the best feel, were hit the straightest, and were consistently longer than the other clubs I tested. Whether this will transfer over to the real world, I won't know until tomorrow. As my handicap has just continued to rise, any help I can get right now will be worth it. In reality, I probably should have used the money for lessons instead, but my old Cobras were starting to look pretty beat up and I've been thinking about getting new irons for the last year or so. I'll post my results tomorrow night along with a side by side comparison of my score tomorrow against the score I had last with my old clubs. Note: according to the research I've done online, the Burner XD lofts have been adjusted by Taylor made so that a Burner XD PW is probably closer to your standard 9 iron. That in itself makes no difference to me, but apparently for some, they feel it's false advertising on the part of Taylor Made.
